Day 1
Departing Sydney, we head to the south coast region of NSW, an area which has been one of the country’s most bushfire affected. The first stop will be in the quaint township of Milton where you have free time to amble through the town and support the local businesses of the region. Here you have the opportunity to buy locally-made preserves, pottery, antiques or timber goods in one of the town’s stores – perhaps visit the Millhouse Art Gallery, and purchase a piece from a local painter. You might then choose to eat lunch at the delicious Brown Sugar café, where all ingredients are sourced from local producers. Another great spot for lunch is the delicious vegetarian cafe Pilgrims, the corn fritters and fresh juices are a favourite.
We continue our south coast journey leaving the Shoalhaven Shire behind and venturing into the Eurobodalla Shire and the charming riverside town of Moruya. One of the hidden gems here is Rustic pantry Wholefoods where you can fill your Esky here with locally grown, sourced and made produce. Their socially responsible shopping philosophy means that you are not only eating well you are doing so in a sustainable way.
Arriving into the quiet coastal town and fishing harbour of Bermagui you will know why this is a popular summer holiday destination. Choose to have your evening meal in any one of the local establishments that may be open on the day of your visit – perhaps il Passagio for superior Italian food or the highly rated Octopii. Finish it off with ice cream at Bermagui Gelati Clinic – a sweet way to support local business.
Hotel: Bermagui Motor Inn
This morning breakfast is at your leisure at your choice of local café. Perhaps be a little naughty at the Cream Patisserie, or take in the view at Bermi’s Beachside Café. Today is your day to give back, and really support the community. Head out to Cobargo, one of the towns that was devastated by fires, where you will meet local farmers, hear their stories and have the opportunity to rebuild fences for their farms. You’ll be shown the best way to help, and work with a local to make this happen. After a rewarding and hard-working day, relax in Cobargo Pub and enjoy a quiet drink, with dinner included, before returning to Bermagui.
Hotel: Bermagui Motor Inn
Included Meals: Dinner
This morning choose to enjoy breakfast at your choice of local cafe. Maybe head back to your favourite or choose a new local favourite before we start our trip back up the coast. While in Bermagui, perhaps get your Esky full to the brim with some fresh baked bread or pastries from Honorbread – go on, you deserve it after your hard work yesterday! – or visit the Eastwood Deli for some takeaway gourmet.
Leaving the Bega Valley shire behind we arrive at the small seaside town of Tomakin at lunchtime where we have lunch at The Rivermouth Café in Tomakin, part of the Rivermouth General Store, and a great place to show support to the region by filling your Esky with locally produced cakes or baked goods. Later it is onto Bateman’s Bay where you will have free time to explore the local township and local cafes and stores. This will be our overnight stop and is great place to enjoy local fresh seafood – perhaps a platter of local oysters and prawns at the Sandbar Restaurant, head to the Oyster Shed for something more casual, or you might dig into a juicy steak at the Ebb & Flow restaurant. Whichever your choice, your meal will support local farmers, fishermen and restaurant owners bounce back.
Hotel: Mariners on the Waterfront Hotel
Included Meals: Lunch
Relax, sleep in, then why not choose to take a walk along the waterfront to the Starfish Café. This local favourite is a great place to enjoy breakfast while overlooking the water. You could also check out the Batemans Bay Visitors Centre that includes an art gallery, with magnificent works from talented local artisans, perfect for gifts for loved ones.
On the way back to Sydney we stop into the bustling Nowra Farmers Market. This local market is jam packed with farmers’ produce for you to taste and buy, knowing every cent goes directly to the growers. Take the opportunity to fill up your Esky, as you spend time getting to know the local market stall owners, and maybe even the farmers themselves. A moving opportunity to spend time with those who are so passionate about their produce, and truly give back to the local community. Arrive into Sydney early evening.
Note: Subject to change in conditions. Venue suggestions are dependent on bushfire recovery efforts and alternates may be suggested by your driver guide. The local community will appreciate your flexibility and patronage in any of the venues that are available on the day of your trip.
